Marine diesel engine is a type of diesel engine used on ships. It works as follows:


A stream of fresh air is pumped or pumped into the engine cylinder and then compressed to a very high pressure by a moving piston. When air is compressed, its temperature rises so that it ignites the fine mist of fuel that is sprayed into the cylinder. The burning of fuel adds more heat to the charged air, causing expansion and forcing the generator piston to do work on the crankshaft, which in turn drives the ship's propeller through the other shafts.

The two-stroke cycle begins when the piston rises from the bottom of its stroke (i.e. bottom dead center) with the cylinder side intake open. At this point, the exhaust valve is also opened, and fresh air is charged into the cylinder, blowing the exhaust gas left over from the previous stroke out through the open exhaust valve. The valve blows out.


When the piston runs up to about one fifth of its stroke in the morning, it closes the intake, and the exhaust valve closes, so that the temperature and pressure rise to very high values.


When the piston reaches the top of its stroke (top dead center), the fuel valve ejects a fine mist of fuel into the hot air in the cylinder. The fuel burns immediately, and the heat causes the pressure to rise quickly. In this way, the expanding gas forces the piston to move downward during the power stroke.


When the piston moves down to a little more than half of the stroke, the exhaust valve opens, and the high-temperature gas begins to flow outward through the exhaust valve due to its own pressure, which is aided by the fresh air entering through the intake port. The air intake opens as the piston descends further. Then the cycle begins again.


In a two-stroke engine, the crankshaft is turned once to do one power stroke, while in a four-stroke engine, the crankshaft is turned twice to do one power stroke, which is why a two-stroke engine can do about twice as much work as a four-stroke engine at the same size. In current practice, the power output of a two-stroke engine is about eighty percent higher than that of a four-stroke engine with the same cylinder diameter and the same speed. The increase in the power of this engine makes the two-stroke generator widely used as the main engine of large ships.
